MBMS students attend debate at Colby College

Kneeling in front of their college counterparts are MBMS debaters Alex Pane, Emily Rice, William Steele, Luke Wooden, Jacob Rutberg, Trevor Coulombe, Ellie Beauchamp and Casey Rogers.

The Mt. Blue Middle School Debate Team was invited again this year to sit in on a debate sponsored by the George E. Murray Debate Society at Colby College.

The debate topic was, “The South should not be allowed to celebrate Confederate History Month.” At the completion of the debate, audience members voted on the side they thought did the better job of debating, and the podium was then open to anyone who wanted to make a statement. MBMS students Emily Rice and William Steele spoke extemporaneously about their views on the topic, and Rice raised additional facts about the Civil War, which prompted a Colby student who spoke after her to quip that he was not nearly as well prepared as the MBMS student was.

“This was a great experience for our students,” said debate team advisor Kim Fast. “We have since had an invitation from the Bates College Debate Team to debate against them next month. We are also planning to use some new technology to do some virtual debates with other teams across the country.”

The MBMS students have studied and practice parliamentary debate procedures in their weekly debates, which take place on Wednesdays after school.
