MSAD 58 public hearing date changed due to an error

SALEM – Due to an error found on the warrant, the public hearing on the MSAD 58 budget originally set for Tuesday has been rescheduled for Tuesday, June 1, according to the superintendent’s secretary, Andrea Adams.

An emergency school board meeting has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 24 at Mt. Abram High School “to address this issue,” Adams said. The corrected warrant needs to be signed by the board and the rescheduled meeting’s announcement needs to be posted for one week to alert the public of the change.

Articles at the public hearing are closed; residents may decrease the board-approved budget articles or vote the budget up or down, they cannot increase expenditures.

The MSAD 58 school board unanimously approved $9.7 million budget on April 29 and represents a decrease of $460,000 from the 2009-2010 budget. After applying the reductions in state subsidy and a release of $380,000 from surplus funds, carried over from the current fiscal year, the budget will represent a net decrease of $5,000 in the district’s net local assessment. Due to cost shifts within the district, primarily a little less than $200,000 out of Eustis, the other four towns can expect increases in their local assessments.

The district-wide budget referendum vote, which asks residents if they approved of the action taken at the public hearing, has not changed and will still be held on June 8, along with the primary election.
