Arthur Hutchinson (1924-2008)

RUMFORD – Arthur Hutchinson, 84, of Carthage, went home to be with his Lord and savior Monday evening at the Rumford Community Hospital.

He was born in Carthage, Sept. 23, 1924, a son of Laforest and Cora (Snowman) Hutchinson and received his education in Carthage schools.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II and was a member of the DAV and the Weld American Legion.

Mr. Hutchinson was self employed as a logger and farmer and received numerous ribbons at fairs in Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio for his oxen and milking shorthorns.  He was a member of the Carthage Union Church, the Webb River Grange #108, and the State and National Grange, and was a former member of the Carthage Historical Society.  He also had served his hometown as a selectman in 1953, road commissioner in 1948 and from 1959 until recently, served as fence viewer.

He is survived by his wife Wilhelmina (Brown) Hutchinson of Carthage, whom he married March 29, 1948; their children, Lorna Hutchinson of Carthage; Leonard Hutchinson and his fiancé  Pam Bean of Carthage, and Gaylene Cooper and her husband Mark of Windham; 17 grandchildren, Kathleen Goodwin and her husband Andrew of Spring, Texas, Louise Blood and her husband, Wendell of East Dixfield, Julie Marcoux and her husband Jeff of Wakefield, NH, Melissa Hutchinson and her fiancé  Chris Powers of NY, Jonathan Hutchinson of Carthage, Jessica Hutchinson of Canton, Arthur Hutchinson of Carthage, Craig Cooper of Vernon, NY, Eric Cooper of Windham, Daniel Harvey, Jr. of Bangor, Jason Scruton and his wife Kerri of Farmington, NH, Katherine Carroll and her husband Aaron of Limerick, Melissa Walton and her fiancé Jeff  Payeur of Canton, Stephanie Bolduc and her fiancé Elwood Pingree of Rumford, Naomi Bolduc and her fiancé Randy Hoyt of Rumford, Breanna Mason of Rumford, and Wesley Mason of Carthage; 24 great-grandchildren;  He was predeceased by two daughters, Priscilla Harvey and Sherrilyn Scrutin; a son-in-law, Arthur Scrutin; a grand daughter, Emma Wilhelmina Hutchinson; and five sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 PM from the Carthage Union Church.  Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 42 Weld Street, Dixfield, Friday 4-7p.m.  Interment will be at the Newman Cemetery in Carthage.  Those who desire may make memorial contributions in Mr. Hutchinson’s memory to the Carthage Union Church, 672 Carthage Road, Carthage, ME  04224.  Condolences may be sent to the family at  mailto:wilesfuneralhomes@verizon.net
