MADISON – Frederick J. “Fred” Martin, Jr., 83, of Dallas Plantation, died Sunday evening, March 6, 2011 at Maple Crest Rehabilitation Center in Madison.

He was born on April 19, 1927 in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., a son of Frederick and Isabelle L’hommedieu Martin, Sr. He received his education in Huntington High School and left to join the United States Navy at the age of 17 where he served during World War II. Upon his return from the Navy, he completed high school, married his sweetheart, Jeanette MacMillan on June 28, 1953 at St. Hugh’s Church, and went to work at Long Island Lighting Company as a lineman. He was employed at Long Island Lighting, now known as National Grid, for 38 years, retiring in 1990.

After his retirement, he and his family moved to their home on the Overlook in Dallas Plantation where he was active in the community having been a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served on the church vestry; assisted with his son Rick’s, Boy Scout Troop; volunteered for Meals on Wheels; and was active in the Kemankeag Masonic Lodge, Kora Temple Shrine, and the Western Mountain Shrine Club. He enjoyed music, puzzles, reading, and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening in his younger years when he lived on Long Island.

He is survived by his wife Janette of Dallas Plantation; a daughter, Debbie Crosson and her husband, George of Dallas Plt.; a sister, Catherine Barbary of FL; 2 granddaughters, Megan Crosson and Jacqueline Spear both of Dallas Plt.; a great grand daughter, Eva Marie Spear also of Dallas Plt. a nephew, Brian Barbary of PA; and a niece, Renee Snapp of FL; He was predeceased by a son, Rick on Dec. 18, 2008.

Public memorial services will be held on May 14th at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Good Shepherd, Main Street, Rangeley with Masonic memorial services conducted by Kemankeag Masonic Lodge. Interment will follow services at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley. Following the interment, all are welcome to a reception in the undercroft of the Church of the Good Shepherd hosted by the Episcopal Church Women. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who desire give memorial contributions in Fred’s memory to the Church of the Good Shepherd, PO Box 156, Rangeley, Maine 04970. Cremation and memorial services are being cared for and provided by the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington.
