James M. Witt, III (1932-2010)

FARMINGTON – James M. Witt, III, 78, a resident of Farmington, died peacefully on Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Sandy River Nursing Care Center after a long illness.

He was born in New York City on Feb. 10, 1932, son of James M. Witt Jr. and Daisie (Hall) Witt. Jim attended schools in Yonkers, N.Y., then joined the Navy for four years during the Korean conflict as a medical corpsman. He married Corinne (Boucher) Witt on October 23, 1954 in Chelsea, Mass. Jim graduated with honors from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1959 with a degree in Pharmacy. He moved to Farmington in 1959 to work at Howard’s Rexall Drug and eventually bought the business in 1972. He worked there until his retirement in 1994, along with two of his sons.

Jim was a member of the Maine Masonic Lodge 20, past commander of Pilgrim Commandry, the Kora Shrine Temple, the American Legion and the VFW. He was also very civic minded. He served on the MSAD 9 School Board, the Farmington Business Association, the Farmington Village Corporation, and was past president of the Farmington Ski Club. He was a member of the Farmington Board of Selectmen, which was responsible for initiating the Downtown Revitalization Project. Jim was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed coaching Little League and Pony League baseball. He was an avid fan of the Mt. Blue Cougars and the Boston Red Sox.

He retired to Boothbay Harbor in 1994 and was active in the community there as well. He was the president of the Carousel Condominium Home Owners’ Association for many years and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of harbor life. Jim and Corinne travelled extensively all over the world, especially by cruise ship. They made a great number of new acquaintances and experienced adventures in many different cultures.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Jane Bissler. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Corinne, of Farmington; his sons: Jim and his wife, Michele of Farmington; Edward and his wife Diana of Madison, N.H. and Robert and his wife, Nicole of Industry and grandchildren: Amy, Elizabeth, Jeffrey, Jamie, Edward, and Alex Witt and Sarah and Hannah Neal.

Family and friends are invited to call Thursday afternoon from 4-6 PM at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., (Rtes. 2 & 27) Farmington, where public Masonic services, provided by Maine Lodge 20 AF&AM of Farmington, will be held at 6 p.m. Those who desire may give remembrance gifts to the Sandy River Center for Healthcare and Rehabilitation ATT: Activity Fund 119 Livermore Falls Rd.
