AUBURN – Jean Mitchell, 85, of Lewiston died early Monday, Dec. 7, 2009 at The Hospice House in Auburn.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1924 in Phillips, the daughter of Alton P. and Helen H. (Perrin) Edwards. She was educated in the schools of Phillips graduating in 1941. She married Everett Mitchell on June 13, 1942 in Phillips, who passed away on Oct. 1, 1985.

Jean moved from Phillips to Farmington in 1970. She worked for Forster Mfg. Co. in Strong for 10 years before owning and operating Coin Operated Laundries in Phillips and Strong for several years. In 1970 she owned and operated The Cedar Craft Gift Shop in Farmington for six years. She then worked for Western Area Agency on Aging in Farmington for five years retiring in 1985. Jean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Farmington Ward, holding many callings including Relief Society President for many years, through which she served a mission in Vancouver, British Columbia.

She was a member of Merrill Rebekah Lodge and past president of The Rebekah Assembly of Maine, a past president of The Ladies Aux. Patriarchs Militant of Maine, a former member of The Phillips Grange, a member of The Order of The Amaranth of Farmington, The American Legion Aux., Prescott Fairbanks Post, and WWI Barracks. Jean enjoyed reading and was an avid reader.

Jean is survived by two daughters Esther M. Bennet and her husband Warren of Lewiston, and Ruth Marden and Clint Cushman of Wilton; four grandchildren: Joseph, Vernon, Aaron, and Tanis; two great grandchildren Austin and Emily; a sister, Nathalie St. Clair of Auburn; and a brother Ronald Edwards of Windham. She was predeceased by her husband, a daughter Helen Scamman and a brother Neal Edwards.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday Dec. 10, 2009 at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 141 Woodfield Rd., Farmington. A committal service will take place at Strong Village Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Helen & Dorothy Scamman Scholarship, c/o Anna Scamman, 116 Thompson Walton Ct. Apt. 20, Farmington, Maine 04938.
