John A. Stevenson (1935-2010)

MOORESVILLE, NC – Mr. Stevenson, of Mooresville, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 8, 2010 due to complications from a brief illness.

He was born on June 4, 1935 in Wilton, Maine, to Manilla and John Arthur Stevenson. Raised in Wilton he graduated from Wilton Academy in 1953 and then received his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maine in 1957. Following graduation from college that year, he married his high school sweetheart, Winifred Ranger on October 26, 1957 in Wilton.

John and Winifred moved to Painted Post, N.Y. where he began his 42-year career as an engineer with Ingersoll Rand. Later they relocated to North Carolina where John retired from Ingersoll Rand in Davidson in 1999.

John was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius, since 1989 where he was also a member of the Don Bridger Sunday School Class. John was a life member of the Cornelius Lake Norman Lions Club International where he held various leadership positions. He was also the recipient of the Jack Stickley Fellow Award issued by the Lions Club for Dedicated Humanitarian Services. He received great joy in spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving family members include his wife of 53 years Winifred; son Jeffrey Stevenson and wife Jennifer of Alpine, NY; daughter Julie Patterson and husband Jerry of Claremont; son, Robert Stevenson and wife Leanne of Concord; and grandchildren, Michael Stevenson, Matthew Stevenson, Andrew Stevenson, Courtney Patterson, Sarah Stevenson, Laura Stevenson, and Ashley Stevenson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Bailey officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 19600 Zion Ave, Cornelius, NC 28031 and/or Cornelius Lake Norman Lions Club, P.O. Box 1427, Cornelius, NC 28031.
