Loretta Nowotarski Chapman (1920-2009)

FARMINGTON – Loretta Nowotarski Chapman, 88, of Farmington passed away late Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Sandy River Center for Health Care in Farmington.

She was born in Reading, Penn., on Oct. 2, 1920 the daughter of John and Anna Brophy Nowotarski. She attended St. Peters Schools in Pennsylvania and graduated from St. Peters High School in 1939. Loretta worked for the Berkshire Knitting Mill in Reading, PA. She met George Chapman of Farmington while he was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. They were married Sept. 13, 1943 at St. Peters Rectory in Reading. After his discharge in October 1945 they returned to Farmington where she worked at JJ Newberries and later at Chassies Dept. Store. In 1970 they moved to the Nordica Homestead where Loretta was curator. In October 1973 she and her husband moved back to her hometown of Reading PA where they lived for 10 years before returning to Maine in 1983. Loretta loved to knit for her children and grandchildren, enjoyed playing golf with her husband, and bowling in the Incredible Seniors Bowling League. She was a member of St. Josephs parish in Farmington and the Altar Guild.

Loretta is survived by her husband George; her daughter Susan and her husband Charles Spear; her son John; two grandsons Sean Spear and Scott Chapman; a granddaughter Meika Carter; four great grandchildren; a sister Anna Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Honoring Loretta’s request a private memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Farmington. Internment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.
