Merton L. Karkos (1972 – 2008)

FARMINGTON – Merton L. Karkos, 92, of Temple, died early Saturday morning at Genesis Sandy River Center for Healthcare in Farmington.

He was born in Wilton, June 3, 1916, a son of Michael A. and Helen Abbey Karkos. He attended Wilton Academy, graduating in 1934. On Jan. 7, 1935, he married Bertha Farrington. She died in May of 1972.

Mr. Karkos was employed at the Wilton Woolen Co. for several years, raced horses for nineteen years, and later worked as a custodian at Knowlton and McCleary in Farmington. He was a member of Wilton Masonic Lodge #156 and enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time at his camp in Temple.

He is survived by his son, Lyle and his wife Gail of Temple; grandsons, Richard “Rick” Karkos and his wife Donna of Topsham, Bruce Karkos and his wife Sherie of Fairbanks, and Jon Karkos and his wife Teresa of Temple; a grand daughter-in-law, Joanne Karkos of Farmington Falls; 8 great grandchildren; 2 step-great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; 3 step great-great grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Priscilla Karkos of Dover, NH and Beverly Karkos of FL; He was predeceased by his wife; a grandson, Paul Karkos; brothers, Harold, Floyd, Francis “Fat,” Milan, and Leo.

There will not be any services but the family suggests that those who would like to honor Merton’s life may do so by contributing to the Wilton Area Food Pantry, PO Box 517, Wilton, ME 04294. Cremation services are being cared for and provided by the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service, an Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington.
