Milton Nat Harris (1915-2008)

Milton Nat Harris, 93, a well-known and long-time farmer of New Sharon, Maine, died peacefully, Sept. 18, 2008 with his family by his side.

Milton was born on Jan. 31, 1915 and grew up in New Sharon. He moved to Hartland, Maine for a brief time where he met and married Helen Ella Hubbard. They immediately moved to their farm in New Sharon where they lived and were married for 68 years and raised a family of six children.

Over the years, Milton was active in many organizations to help farmers and was on the boards of the ASCS and the Maine Farm Bureau. He also served in local civic capacities as a selectman and as a chairman of the School Committee. Milton belonged to the Grange, and was a life member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge #123 AF and AM of New Sharon and the Messalunsket Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #170 of New Sharon.

When he wasn’t in his fields preparing the land and raising crops, or in his barn tending to his large herd of dairy cows, Milton was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially enjoying trips to the Miramichi River, Canada, with his sons and friend, Dudley Dumaine. He was a member of the Renous Salmon Sucker’s Club.

Family was very important to them, and they enjoyed traveling throughout the country to visit each of children and their families.

Milton was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 2002 and eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by his sons, Milton Jr. and wife Faye of Beach City, TX, Adrian and wife Debra of Farmington, ME, Stephen and wife Betty of Wilton, ME, Durwood and wife Emiko, of Vacaville, CA, his two daughters, Loraine Cyr, and husband Carroll of Northern Berwick, ME, and Ilean Cavallaro and husband Jim of Gorham, ME; his sister-in-law Millicent Harris of Somerset, MA, 20 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. from the New Sharon United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen Garcia, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service, and Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Sunday 6-8p.m. where members of Franklin Masonic Lodge #123 of New Sharon will hold Masonic services at 7:30 p.m.

Interment will be at the Village Cemetery in New Sharon. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Franklin Masonic Lodge #123 Building Fund of New Sharon, PO Box 127, New Sharon, ME 04955. Words of condolences may be sent to the family at info@wilesrc.com
