Verne Leroy Merrow (1922-2009)

JAY – Verne Leroy Merrow died on Nov. 15, 2009 at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 20, 1922 in Hartford, Maine, the son of Edna and Ray Merrow. He graduated from Canton High School in 1940 and entered the military. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army Air Force where he was a mechanic on a B24 Liberator Bomber in the European Theatre. In 1948 married Dorothy Tilton and they made their home on a farm in Beans Corner.

He worked for the town of Jay, operated a successful dairy and poultry farm and served on the board of the FHA. He will long be remembered for his honesty and work ethic. Favorite activities included hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by a son Leroy Merrow of Portland and his daughter Marguerite; daughter Linda Smith of Jay and her son Michael MacMahan; daughter Loretta Wentworth of Rockport and her daughters Julie Dutille, and Lisa Holmes; daughter Sheryl Glover of Greensboro N.C. and her children Kelly Scotto di Carlo, Ryan Glover and Lindsay Glover; daughter Nancy Merrow of Wilton and her children Alison Ouellet, Peter Luthy and Kurt Luthy.

He was predeceased by sisters Irene Maxim, Avis Leighton, Hazel Paradis and Geraldine Gammon and brothers Clayton, Kenneth and Gerald Merrow.

Cremation arrangements are by Adams-McFarlane Funeral and Cremation Service 108 Court St. Farmington. Services and burial will be at the Maine Veterans Cemetery Chapel on the Mt.
