FARMINGTON – Farmington Recreation Department’s 5th Annual Fishing Derby for adults with developmental disabilities will take place at Rollo Pond in UMF’s Abbott Park on Wednesday, July 3 and will last for one hour, from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.

Eligible participants will be adults with developmental disabilities that will be accompanied by either a family member or supervisor from a local support agency. Agency supervisors may not exceed a ratio of 3 consumers to 1 staff member.

Should the interest level for this event surpass 36 people, a lottery system will be used to assign who will begin to fish at the start of the derby and who will replace anyone who has caught their bag limit of one Rainbow Trout or Brook Trout.

Four trophies will be awarded to lucky entrants for their various catch weight and time limit successes.
Anyone wishing to enter the Derby must contact the Farmington Recreation Department office by calling 778-3464 during a 7-day period in June, Monday, June 17 through Monday, June 24. Calls may be placed and registration information left on our answer machine day or night. Please leave the participant’s name, telephone number, town of residence, agency affiliation (if any) and derby assistant’s name.

A Recreation Department staff member will contact you right after the 24th to confirm the registration. There will be a sufficient number of casting spots marked out beforehand along Rollo Pond. If a fish is caught by a participant, that space may be vacated for another person waiting to try their luck.

Once a total of 36 fish are caught or one hour passes, whichever comes first, the Derby will end.

The Recreation Department will not be able to furnish fishing equipment, however, The Life Enrichment Advancing People program has generously planned on providing a limited number of fishing poles to those who need one. Due to the expected turnout, fly rods cannot be accommodated. Bait, such as worms, night crawlers or lures is also the responsibility of the participant.

For more information please contact the office of the Farmington Recreation Department at 778-3464. Farmington Recreation Department, in conjunction with sponsor Coca-Cola Bottling of Farmington, is hosting the event. This opportunity is reserved for a special population of our community and is free of charge.
