Gunthers lead Sandy River XC teams in inaugural meet

WATERVILLE – Brother and sister duo Kathrine and Thad Gunther of Temple, turned in fine performances Thursday, Sept. 16 in the first cross country running meet for the newly-formed Sandy River Track club.

On the girls side, Kathrine timed her surge just right and left the field behind her with a quarter of a mile left to go in the 1.5 mile middle school race. Her time of 11:30 claimed the first place spot and led her team to a first place finish out of seven schools. Alissa Staples, who bounced back from an illness at the beginning of the week, placed fourth just 27 seconds behind Gunther. Jocelyn Daggett was fifth in 12:22 followed by Emily McCarthy, 12th in 14:02 and finishing the scoring was Miriam Cohen, 21st in 16:04.

The boys team was second out of six schools and were led by Thad Gunther who also won the race with a time of 11:03. Thad ran a carbon copy of his sister’s race as he picked off the lead runner with a half mile to go and never looked back. Also running fine races were: Brendan Hickey 4th in 11:21, McKinley Goozey 20th in 12:35, Steven Minns 24th in 12:50, Zeke Robinson 25th in 12:55, Sam McIntosh in 14:23, Eric Mikrut in 14:53 and Ricky Chen in 14:56.

The Sandy River Middle School Cross Country team was formed to replace the Mt. Blue Middle School program which was dropped by the district last spring. The team is affiliated with the Sandy River Track club which replaced the Farmington Recreation program this past summer. There are currently 50 registered athletes in the club 16 are on the cross country running team. It’s not too late to join the cross country team. Any interested students in grades 5-8 can contact the club director Arvid Cullenberg at 778-4971 for more information. Former Mt Blue High School standout Joe Staples is the head coach. Sam Bonsey, a UMF student from Falmouth  is the assistant coach.
