Owls best Beavers in double header

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team slipped to 9-10 with a 9-6, 12-11 doubleheader sweep by the University of Maine at Presque Isle in non-conference action today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers are scheduled to host North Atlantic Conference foe Husson University in non-conference action Friday. The twinbill is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

The Owls’ victories were powered by big late innings as the visitors pushed six runs across in the sixth inning of the opener to take the victory and scored five times in the seventh inning of the nightcap to grab the win.

During the doubleheader, Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME) expanded Farmington’s individual single season home run record to seven with a pair of blasts.

In the opener, a two-run double by Erin Pelletier (Madawaska, ME) and a two-run triple for Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) paced the Owls (15-9) in a six-run blitz in the sixth for a 9-6 victory.

Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, ME) led UMPI with a single and two doubles, while Pelletier had a base hit to go along with her two-bagger and Cassie Green (Truro, Nova Scotia) added a pair of singles.

Barnes slugged a solo home run for the Beavers, while Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) collected two hits and two RBI and Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) smacked a pair of singles.

Nicole Russell (Newcastle, ME) recorded the victory with nine hits allowed, two walks and five strikeouts.

Jess Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) took the loss with 10 hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts. Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) worked a scoreless seventh. Only two of UMPI’s nine runs were earned.

In game two, the Owls parlayed four hits and two errors into five runs in rallying to down the Beavers 12-11. Farmington led 9-7 entering the final frame.

Desiree Smith (Thomaston, ME) doubled twice and drove in two runs for UMPI with Pelletier and Kathleen Higgins (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) each singling, doubling and driving in a pair of runs. Green supplied a two-run pinch-hit single that highlighted the seventh.

Barnes went 5 for 5 for the Beavers with four singles and a two-run home run with three RBI, while Chelsea Cozzolino (Bryant Pond, ME) singled twice, doubled and drove in four runs. McPhail and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) each singled three times in the loss.

Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME) went the distance in the victory with a walk.

Bergeron took the loss with four free passes and two strikeouts in defeat.
