FARMINGTON – Players from the University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team will don pink T-shirts for warm-ups prior to their game Friday night against Castleton State College in Dearborn Gymnasium to join hundreds of teams and organizations across the nation participating in the WBCA Pink Zone™.

The WBCA Pink Zone™ initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. This season’s event takes place from Feb. 13-22.

Admission to Friday’s men’s and women’s basketball games (men at 5:30 p.m., women’s to follow) is free. Donations will be collected at the entrances with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund™.

Fans who wear pink to the games will also receive two Tees for Threes tickets. Tees for Threes is a promotion that allows one fan to win a Farmington basketball T-shirt each time a Farmington men’s or women’s basketball player hits a 3-point shot.

The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund™ is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, was a past president and founding member of the WBCA, and a galvanizing voice for the Association. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on Jan. 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as “Think Pink”, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.

WBCA Pink Zone™ is the first of two events for Farmington basketball this weekend as Saturday is Senior Day at Dearborn Gymnasium for the men’s and women’s teams. Following each game against Green Mountain (men at 1 p.m., women to follow), the senior players and staff of the respective teams will be honored by their coaches in brief ceremonies. Regular admission will be charged at Saturday’s games.
