UMF drops baseball doubleheader to Fisher on opening day

HAVERHILL, MA – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball team opened its season by dropping a doubleheader to Fisher College 12-0 and 2-1 in 11 innings in non-conference action at Haverhill Field today.

The Beavers (0-2) are scheduled to visit Bates College on Wednesday.

In the second game, Josh Garneau (South Portland, ME) plated Russ Schmelzer (Winthrop, ME) with a single in the third inning, but Fisher grabbed the win in the 11th inning on an overthrow on a steal at second base.

Garneau finished with three singles, while Schmelzer had a pair of base hits and Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) stroked a double.

Bill Ridge (South Portland, ME) tossed seven innings of two-hit ball for the Beavers. Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) worked 3.1 innings in relief.

In the opener, Ethan Jean (Jackson, ME) doubled and Garneau and Schmelzer each singled in the loss.

Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) started and took the loss for Farmington in 4.1 innings.
