UMF ski teams compete at regionals

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. – The University of Maine at Farmington men’s and women’s alpine and Nordic ski teams competed in the USCSA Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference Championships at Waterville Valley over the weekend.

The Beaver women placed eighth overall in the Alpine standings, while the men finished ninth. In Nordic competition, the Farmington men placed as a team in two out of three events, while the women did not have a team score.

For the Alpine women, Colby-Sawyer College swept Saturday’s slalom and Sunday’s giant slalom for two points. CSC was followed by Plymouth State (4), Brown (7), Boston College (8) and the University of Massachusetts (9). The Beavers finished seventh in the slalom and 10th in the giant slalom to total 17 points.

In the slalom, Calle McCartney (Bow, NH) led the Beavers with a 30th-place time at 1:54.98. Laura Ward (Lincoln, ME) placed 40th at 2:12.97 followed by Courtney Poston (Topsham, ME) in 42nd at 2:15.55. Brown’s Krista Consiglio was the winner at 1:38.97.

In the giant slalom, McCartney was 33rd at 2:37.56 with Ward at 45th at 2:54.50 and Poston 50th at 3:03.23. CSC’s Danielle Shannon was first at 2:17.27.

For the Alpine men, Plymouth State was the top team at four points with Babson (6), CSC (7), Castleton (9) and Boston College (9) rounding out the top five. Farmington was eighth in the slalom and ninth in the giant slalom for 17 points.

In the slalom, Kendall Ricker (Turner, ME) finished 27th at 1:39.74 followed by Brendan Fields (NY) at 31st at 1:47.49 and Jon Dennett (Winthrop, ME) at 38th at 2:06.02. CSC’s Travis Plass was the winner at 1:29.78.

In the giant slalom, Dennett was tops at 32nd in 2:23.52 with Ricker at 34th in 2:24.26 and Fields at 42nd at 2:34.27. Plymouth State’s Peter Ostroski was the winner at 2:12.20.

In the women’s Nordic competition, Cornell was the overall winner with Melinda McAleese sweeping the 15K freestyle, 1.5K sprint and 8.5K classical.

In the 15K freestyle, Farmington’s Kristen Cosgrove placed 27th in 1:38:01.

In the 1.5K sprint, Cosgrove was 26th in 6:37.

In the 8.5K classical, Cosgrove ended up 29th in 57:15.

In the men’s Nordic competition, Clarkson was the top team, boasting individual wins from Matt Delaney in the 15K freestyle and 1.5K sprint and Alex Benway in the 8.5K classical.

In the 15K freestyle, Farmington’s Scott Hilton (Farmington, ME) and Corey White (Deerfield, NH) finished 38th and 39th, respectively, at 1:23:17 and 1:27:14.

In the 1.5K sprint, Nate Dumais (Turner, ME) finished 32nd at 4:18 with Hilton placing 41st at 5:19 and Patrick Pozzetti (Portland, CT) 42nd at 5:28.

In the 8.5K classical, Pozzetti ended up 39th at 39:45 followed by Hilton at 42nd in 42:26 and White 43rd at 46:19.
