UMF softball defeats Green Mt. in doubleheader

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team topped Green Mountain College 7-4, 7-0 in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (12-11, 8-4) are scheduled to host Castleton State College in a NAC twinbill on Sunday at noon. The Eagles dropped to 8-18 (3-9) are scheduled to visit Thomas College Sunday at noon.

In the opener, Farmington used a four-run fifth inning to grab a 5-2 lead en route to the 7-4 victory.

Mckell Barnes (Durham, ME) and Chelsea Cozzolino (Bryant Pond, ME) each clubbed an RBI double in the fifth with Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) supplying a run-scoring base hit. Mitchell and Cozzolino each registered a pair of hits in the game with Casandra Dyer (Freeport, ME) and Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, NH) each adding a double.

Liz Bergeron (Milford, ME) went the distance for the win with two walks and 10 strikeouts in a seven-hitter.

Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) singled and doubled for the Eagles, while Hillary Dernier (Seattle, WA) plated a run with a single.

Holden took the complete-game loss with nine hits allowed, four walks and four strikeouts.

In the second game, Jess Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) hurled a three-hitter in leading the Beavers to the 7-0 rout.

Timmreck struck out seven and walked two in the complete game.

Barnes paced the offense with three singles, a double and two RBI with Emily Coye (Naples, ME) enjoying a three-hit day with an RBI. Dyer, Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) and Erin Porter (Bangor, ME) each knocked in a run in the win.

Holden had a pair of singles for the Eagles.

Holden took the mound loss with eight hits allowed, two walks and two strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
