FARMINGTON – Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, Maine) scored 1:01 into overtime to lift Husson University to a 1-0 win over University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference field hockey action Friday afternoon at Prescott Field.

The Beavers closed out their regular season at 11-5 overall (5-2 NAC) and await the NAC postseason seedings. Playoffs are scheduled to begin Oct. 30. The Eagles finished out their regular season at 8-5 (6-1).

Vaillancourt tapped in a cross by Jillian Morin (Manchester, Maine) give Husson its second win over the Beavers this season. The Eagles defeated Farmington 3-2 in non-conference play in Bangor on Sept. 19.

The two teams stood even throughout the contest with the Beavers holding an 18-15 advantage in shots, while the Eagles took 12 penalty corners to Farmington’s 10.

Farmington’s Sara Lane (Hiram, Maine) deflected an Emma Deans (Gorham, Maine) hit toward goal in the opening half, but Husson goalkeeper Kristen Capen (Leeds, Maine) was able to make the stop.

The Eagles took 10 penalty corners in the second half, but were unable to find a goal. The Beavers’ best bid came on a Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) shot with under 10 minutes to play. The shot got past Capen, but Helen Berry (Belfast, Maine) cleared it before it could get past the cage.

Husson held the attack in the brief extra session with Farmington goalkeeper Sarah Brown (Windham, Maine) snubbing Vaillancourt before the freshman came back with the game-winner to help Husson to the 1-0 NAC victory.

Brown stopped 12 shots in the loss. Capen finished with 13 saves for Husson.

FARMINGTON – Katie Cray (Richmond, Maine) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Maine at Farmington women’s soccer team to a 3-0 North Atlantic Conference win over Maine Maritime Academy Saturday at Prescott Field.

The Beavers finished their regular season at 9-7-1 (6-1 NAC) and earned the second seed in the NAC tournament. Farmington is scheduled to host the winner of Husson University/Thomas College on Oct. 30 in semifinal action. The Mariners ended their season at 4-9-2 (1-5-1).

Cray scored off a Kayla Tuttle (Waterville, Maine) feed at 17:07 and followed off a pass by Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine), set up by a throughball from Leigh Ronald (Farmington, Maine) at 28:57 for the 2-0 lead for the Beavers.

Tuttle pushed the advantage to 3-0 at 32:09 off a lead by Cray.

The Mariners, playing with only 10 due to disciplinary action, only forced Farmington keeper McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine) to make one save in the contest as the Beavers grabbed the 3-0 win. Farmington held a 33-4 shot advantage in contest.

Lacey Jackson (York, Pa.) made 15 saves for Maine Maritime.

Men’s Soccer: Maine Maritime Academy 1, UMF 0
FARMINGTON – Abdullah Alykhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) scored off a direct kick late in the second half to give Maine Maritime Academy a 1-0 victory over University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action this afternoon at Prescott Field.

Set up just outside the box on a Farmington foul, Alkhayyat’s blast cruised just out of the reach of Farmington netminder Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine) at 87:21 to give the Mariners a 1-0 win. The Beavers had a free kick and a corner kick in the final minute, but Maine Maritime was able to hold on for the victory.

It was a relatively quiet opening half with a direct kick by MMA’s Daniel Hassett (Gorham, Maine) being handled by Peters and Farmington’s Brendan Santry (Tallahassee, Fla.) going high on a crisp cross by Zach Good (Westbrook, Maine) the only bids of note.

The shot output increased in the second half with Peters making a diving stop on Richie Munster (Greenville, Maine) and making the save on a rebound attempt by Ben Russell (Farmington, Maine) early in the half. The Beavers were issued 10 corner kicks in the second, but unable to find a goal.
