UMF women’s soccer, 1-0
FARMINGTON – Logan Faulkingham (St. Louis, MO) scored her first collegiate goal with 10:15 left in regulation to lift the University of Maine at Farmington women’s soccer team to a 1-0 season-opening victory over Maine Maritime Academy today at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (1-0) are scheduled to host the University of Maine at Machias on Saturday. The Mariners slipped to 0-2 and are scheduled to visit Machias on Wednesday.

Following a corner kick by Alida Peake (Penobscot, ME), Faulkingham snared a Maine Maritime clearing attempt and drilled the back of the net for the 1-0 difference.

The Beavers were not without their chances throughout the contest as Farmington held a 12-7 shot advantage (8-2 in the second half). Melissa St. Amand (Windsor, ME) forced MMA netminder Lacey Jackson (York, PA) to making a leaping stop six minutes prior to Faulkingham’s game-winner.

The Mariners had the best opportunity of the opening half as a Megan Russell (Peru, ME) takeaway at midfield led to doorstop save by Farmington goalkeeper McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) on an Alexis Bennett (Freedom, ME) bullet. Moments later, Bennett made Barnes come up with a diving save to preserve a scoreless game.

Barnes and Crystal Johnson (Cornville, ME) shared goalkeeping duties for the Beavers with Barnes grabbing five saves and Johnson making one stop.

Jackson recorded four saves in the loss.

The Beavers grabbed a 2-1 edge 5:18 into the second half as Dillon Clark (Old Town, ME) headed a Dan Horne (Bay Shore, NY) cross. Martin followed with his second score 10 minutes later for a 3-1 lead.

A Ben Russell (Farmington, ME) marker with 37 seconds left to play gave the Mariners in chance in the waning moments, but the Beavers were able to hold on for the victory.

Farmington netminder Paul Dupre (Rehoboth, MA) made three saves in the win.

Jeff Butland (Cumberland, ME) stopped six shots in the loss as the Mariners were outshot 17-11.
