Arts Institute of Maine presents Michael Cooper, Masked Marvel, on Oct. 15

FARMINGTON – The Arts Institute of Western Maine is proud to present Michael Cooper, Masked Marvel on October 15 at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Auditorium in the Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington. In this delightful show for all ages, Cooper has created magical, hand-sculpted masks, whimsical characters, and mind-boggling stilt-walking to tell original stories of courage and wonder. His physical repertoire ranges from the madcap to the sublime. The result is “moving sculpture.”

Michael Cooper is a native of Chesterville, Me. A graduate of Goddard College in Peace Studies, he studied mime for six years with master mime-teachers Tony Montanaro of Celebration Mime in West Paris  and Etienne Decroux of Paris, France. His exquisite performances of humor and poignancy, nimble speech and eloquent gesture have dazzled audiences of all ages around the globe for almost 30 years.

He enthralls his audience with his astute observations of everyday life, the quick wit of a first rate comedian, and the surprising twists of a master storyteller. Cooper says, “I think every human being has creativity. I’m really out to help people explore that.” This show will spark delight and creativity in people of all ages.

Cooper’s whimsical masks, created out of paper, fabric, or wood, can take up to 300 hours each to design and complete. His subjects include “The Baby,” “The Wind,” “The Dog,” “The Fish” and “The Nose, ” who transform everyday occurrences into little miracles.

Lincoln Auditorium provides excellent visibility from all seats. Best parking is on the lower level of Roberts Learning Center off Main Street, or vicinity street parking.
