CARRABASSETT VALLEY – John Orcutt’s photographic work will be featured in an exhibit at the Carrabassett Valley Public Library, from Nov. 30 through Jan. 10. An artist’s reception will be held at the Library on Dec. 30, from 4:30 – 6 p.m.

Artist’s Statement:

“I suppose it goes without saying, that when you live in a place that is almost entirely forested, it is easy to take the trees for granted – maybe a reversal on the old saying, “not seeing the trees for the forest.”  However, over the years, as I have followed my passion for photographing the natural environment of the western mountains of Maine, I find that I am often drawn to specific tree forms to create strong compositions.  When asked to exhibit some of my photographs in the Carrabassett Library, I decided to choose my favorite images of trees as a tribute to their contribution to our beautiful natural environment.

“For the nature photographer one of the big challenges is trying to find pleasing compositions in the visual chaos that nature often presents. With their distinctive branching patterns, arresting shapes, wide array of leaf forms and varied bark textures, trees provide subjects that allow me to isolate specific forms and simplify the photographic landscape.  In my effort to raise an awareness of the everyday beauty trees bring into our lives, I am fortunate to live in this part of Maine, where the forest is composed of an unusually broad range of species, growing in a varied number of micro-environments, all within easy access.”
