Rosh Hashana Rain: A poem

ROSH HASHANA RAIN
By Diane Kruchkow

Instead of the shofar
we have the rain
pelting the plants, the
hammock stand, the white metal
lawn chairs,
the roof—
Renewal through water
& clouds & the wet leaves of trees—rain dripping from the apples
Sustenance for the dry land

The rabbi explains the shofar
as the cry to God—
our calling to come close
But here we are already in the rain
already being one with it
already, maybe, sustained
by happenings beyond us

& maybe renewal is just that:
finding it, being one with it
& not even knowing how far
we can go.
