Go to the Source for a little ‘me’ time

FARMINGTON – To start this new year off right, a couple of yoga experts are offering you a chance to do just that.

Classes have started back up at Source 365 Living Arts Center with an added instructor and a new studio. An open house is set for Saturday, Jan. 14, from noon to 4 p.m. Yoga and Thai Yoga massage demonstrations along with a bake sale, raffles and more fun will be open to the public.

Sara Mulvey opened the center in 2005 after graduating from the University of Maine at Farmington with a bachelor’s degree in Community Health Education. While at UMF, she taught yoga classes at the fitness center to a growing and enthusiastic enrollment of college students as well as community members at the quiet hour of 6 a.m.

She moved her yoga classes and massage treatments to a colonial clapboard house on Clover Mill Road, calling it Source 365 Living Arts Center. The living arts activities, with the help of Joe Hodgkins of neighboring Temple, has included starting this area’s community supported agriculture, a consumer partnership with farm producers.

In 2008, a beautiful round gazebo for summer yoga classes was completed at the center. Unfortunately, at the same time, the economy began its historic downturn and Mulvey’s students and her massage-loving patrons began cutting back on class time and sessions in order to save.

Mulvey responded by entering the nursing program at the University of Maine at Fort Kent and after a few years more of schooling she recently graduated with a nursing degree. She is employed at Franklin Memorial Hospital in the pediatrics department and works part time at UMF’s heath center.

“I love it,” Mulvey said of her new career. Her love of yoga never left her and, coupled with  former students asking  about taking classes again, she decided to team up with another Sarah and reopen the center to daily classes and treatments.

Sarah Daigle is an experienced teacher of six years from Rhode Island Mulvey met at an intensive yoga certification class in 2005 held in the Berkshires. Daigle teaches yoga, is a Thai yoga massage therapist and Reiki master teacher.

“We have the same vision, so I moved up here in September,” Daigle said. That vision includes daily yoga classes massage and meditation, all good for the mind and body. Classes vary from three to 15 students attending classes held in the summer at the gazebo. Now that’s it’s winter, a newly renovated spacious studio upstairs is open for classes.

“People need it more than ever,” Daigle said of life’s stresses. “It really helps on so many levels.” Beginners are advised to take a smaller class so individual attention is available.  The pair is planning to host cooking lessons with a local experienced chef who also happens to be named Sarah. In the meantime, all kinds of classes, from beginner to experienced, are just beginning.

“This is a good time to start,” Mulvey said for new students who want a happier new year.
