Graduates march in UMF’s 157th Commencement; 416 grads listed

30 mins read

FARMINGTON – While gloomy skies and chilly winds forced the ceremony indoors, the weather did little to dampen the spirits of the more than 400 students who graduated the University of Maine at Farmington today.

UMF reported 416 students marching in the 157th Commencement for the college, filling half the UMF Fitness and Recreation Center with a sea of black cloth, maroon scarfs and square mortarboards. Behind them were the friends, family and loved ones, whose cheers and applause were accompanied by the traditional bagpipes when the graduates marched in behind their professors.

Rep. Hannah Pingree addresses students at Saturday’s Commencement. At right is UMF President Theodora Kalikow.

The keynote address was given by Rep. Hannah Pingree, Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, who used facts about Farmington and parts of her personal history to make the point that those graduating should try new things and involve themselves in their communities.

She noted that 17 percent of all Maine teachers had attended and graduated UMF, and she asked both those with teaching degrees and those majoring in other arts or sciences to be “good teachers” as they went forward. Pingree related Nelson Mandela’s quote on the subject, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

“While there is a lot of debate going on these days about what makes a good school,,” Pingree said, “and how we determine success for our kids, I am sure each of you know the most important lesson that no one seems to dispute: A really good teacher can make a huge difference.”

Robert Sherman, the Senior Class President, with his diploma.

Student Robert Sherman, the Senior Class President, spoke to what students should take with them as they move forward into life. Describing UMF as “a community of learners, leaders, and even activists who are nestled remotely, but yet so vibrantly, within these foothills,” Sherman asked his fellow graduates to meet challenges head on.

“You have learned the tools to think critically,” he said. “You have learned that people matter, and you have been a part of a community unlike any other. Now you can even try and replicate this sense of community and love in everything you do.”

Student Emily Baer, of Brunswick, (right) with two classmates. Baer was mentioned in UMF President Theodora Kalikow’s introduction.

UMF President Theodora Kalikow gave both the school’s welcome and, as is her tradition, spoke in length about a single graduate. Emily Baer, of Brunswick, was heralded by Kalikow as “an exemplary leader in diversity and environmental efforts at UMF” who had taken a semester off to work in Honduras and was involved with both the Diversity Committee and the Sustainable Campus Coalition.

Richard Batt (left) was presented by an honorary degree by UMF President Theodora Kalikow (right). In the background is Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Allen Berger.

The president also presented an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters to Richard Batt, former president of the Franklin County Health Network. Kalikow called Batt a “dedicated leader in comprehensive health care,” noting that the FCHN and Franklin Memorial Hospital had received national recognition and awards under his leadership. Batt, in addition to his other work, is a founding member of the Maine Health Research Institute at UMF and used to chair the college’s Board of Visitors.

Batt thanked UMF and Kalikow, telling graduates to take pride in their communities and use the potential unleashed at UMF throughout their lives.

“This day is a wonderful celebration of student success,” said Kalikow. “We are so proud of our graduates as they go on to lives outside of UMF – making a positive and meaningful difference in their communities, their workplace and the wider world.”

“They call this a ‘commencement’,” Pingree said, “because it’s a beginning of something more than it is an ending. When I was graduating, I don’t think I understood that. I’m here to tell you today, finally, really – that it’s true.”

“Thank you. And good luck.”

  1. That’s funny- it sure looks like everyone kept their shirt on. I guess they were all extending common courtesy to one another, even though it is not required by state law. What a concept. Let’s all hope it catches on. It may even spread as far as downtown Farmington. ;) Congratulations, graduates!
