JAY – A number of fire departments are currently combating a fire at a three-story apartment building on Jewell Street, which was the home to 12 people.
Reports from the scene indicate that the Jay Fire and Rescue has been joined by departments from Livermore, Livermore Falls, Farmington, Wilton and Winthrop, with more than 40 personnel, two ladder trucks and numerous smaller engines. The building, reportedly located at 24 Jewell Street, is a three-story apartment building.
Jay Fire and Rescue’s Assistant Fire Chief Mike Booker said that challenges have included getting manpower to the scene, as many firefighters in area departments work during the day.
Jewell Street is currently blocked off to traffic.

Wow that is scary! Not sure if they should have put in the last paragraph! May make some people a little leary that live in that town!
GOD BLESS…PRAYERS ARE WIITH YOU.
Scary: This is a problem throughout the state. Most towns rely on a volunteer fire department. Unlike the “old days” where most lived where they work, these days, that’s usually not the case. So, yes, it makes it hard to have enough coverage for a fire.
Prayers for those displaced.
Scary:
This is a problem throughout the state…whether you’re living in Farmington, Jay, Livermore Falls, Wilton. It’s the nature of the beast. The training takes forever, firefighters miss time with their families, spend countless nights in the cold, or countless days at work the next day tired from not sleeping while attempting to save someone’s home. There’s no way around this…some think that part time firemen would fix this problem, but the reality of the world is towns rely on dedicated men and women to put their lives aside to attempt to help someone else.
