WILTON – A head-on collision on Route 2 has killed a Jay woman and sent a family of four to the hospital with severe injuries.

According to Wilton Police Department’s Chief Dennis Brown, Avis Pettingill, 73, of Jay, was found dead at the scene of the incident, which occured Friday at 3:27 p.m. on Route 2. Brown described the location of the incident as being 300 feet east of the Rt. 156 intersection.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found two vehicles, a red 1998 Dodge truck and a tan Chevy SUV and radioed back that “multiple people” had been injured, some of them children. Personnel from both Wilton’s fire and police departments responded immediately, along with three NorthStar Ambulances and two LifeFlight helicopters.

Pettingill was found in the right-front passenger seat of the SUV. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

“This was the point of contact between both vehicles,” Brown said, speaking of the right-front corner.

Also in the SUV was the vehicle’s operator, Shawn Hiscock, 29, also of Jay, who is the late Pettingill’s son. Hiscock suffered “severe injuries,” according to Brown and was rushed to Maine Medical Center in Portland via LifeLight.

Also in the vehicle’s back seat were Hiscock’s family; his wife, Heather Hiscock, 30, and their two children, Isaac, 2, and Jordan, 8. Both Heather and Isaac were seriously injured and transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston via LifeLight. Jordan was found to have moderate injuries and was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Operating the Dodge truck was Richard Greco, 59, of Dixfield, who suffered head trauma and was taken to Franklin Memorial. Brown reported that Greco was released a few hours later.

“All parties appeared to have been wearing seat belts,” Brown said. “The children were in child seats.”

Route 2 was closed off for roughly 3.5 hours as first responders and investigators worked on the scene.

Brown said that it was too early in the investigation to release information pertaining to the cause of the collision. Maine State Police personnel were on the scene to assist with accident reconstruction and mapping, as is standard in serious incidents. The Wilton Police Department, state police and Franklin County District Attorney’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is being urged to contact the Wilton police at 645-3876 or 645-4222.
