FREEMAN TOWNSHIP – A Stratton man who became distracted while looking for deer was seriously injured after the truck he was driving went off Foster Hill Road, struck a utility pole and rolled over Wednesday afternoon.

Jacob Howard, 22, of Stratton and his passenger, Jonathan Dumont, 25, also of Stratton, were riding along Foster Hill Road looking for deer to hunt, Dumont said.

“Jake was driving and I was looking into the woods for deer,” he said. “I guess he started looking for deer on the other side too.” The GMC pickup truck missed a curve in the road and skidded off, hitting a pole then rolled over to land upright.

Both men were wearing their seat belts, but Howard’s arm became pinned between the truck’s seat and door in the crash. Emergency crews from the Strong and Kingfield fire departments and NorthStar EMS ambulances were called at 1:45 p.m. Also responding were Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Heidi Wilcox and Keith Barton.

Crews worked to pry open the driver’s door to free Howard from the wreckage.

LifeFlight was called to airlift Howard to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston but couldn’t land in Strong due to the weather conditions. An ambulance with Howard headed directly to CMMC, said a spokeswoman at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

“I think I’d better get checked out,” Dumont said looking a bit shaken up.

A night supervisor at CMMC said Howard had been transferred to another hospital; his condition was not listed.
