FARMINGTON – Thanks to a Maine connection, a soccer team in Tanzania will soon be sporting new uniforms.
The soccer team from a small, very rural village where Farmington native Amber Kapiloff has spent all of 2010 teaching an elementary class, will be receiving 30, especially made T-shirts from the Commercial Arts class at Foster Technology Center.
Glenn Kapiloff, director at the tech center, was talking with his daughter Amber about the team.
“She said the players are incredible, but they play barefoot and have no uniforms or equipment,” Glenn Kapiloff said. He then talked with Commercial Arts class instructor Charlie Fontaine about the possibility of printing T-shirts for the team.
Fontaine seized on the idea and so did his students who got right to work and designed a team logo with a soccer ball surrounded by a laurel wreath with the team’s name, Kidenge Rangers, on the front of the shirt. Amber Kapiloff sent a list of the players so each shirt has a number and the player’s name on the back.
When the shirts were completed, Glenn Kapiloff mailed them off to Africa.
“I have no idea how long it will take for the shirts to arrive,” he said, but he hopes they arrive before Amber’s work in Tanzania comes to a finish later this month. Amber’s parents Glenn and Sharri Kaplioff will be picking up their daughter at the airport on April 22.
