Franklin County’s election results: updated with totals and comparisons

11 mins read

FRANKLIN COUNTY – Mainers turned out to vote Tuesday, voting on seven ballot questions that generated above-average interest for an off-election year.

Generally, Franklin County residents voted in line with the rest of the state. Question 1, the repeal of LD 1020, the so-called “gay marriage law,” passed by a slightly wider margin (six point difference) across the county than the state. Farmington, Carrabassett Valley and Coplin Plantation were the only communities to vote against the people’s veto on Question 1.

The major difference between county and state returns was in Question 3 (11 point  difference), which asked voters to repeal the school district consolidation process and return all laws to their 2007 status. The repeal effort actually passed in Franklin County, with 52 percent of residents seeking to overturn district consolidation, while failing to gain popular support across the state, with only 41 percent of Mainers voting in favor. Towns in MSAD 58 (Strong, Eustis, Avon, Phillips, Kingfield) voted strongly in favor of the repeal, while other communities tended to vote either to keep current laws in place or were roughly split on the issue.

[Editor’s Note: The vote for Industry on Question 1 has been corrected to read 243 in favor (rather than 423). The mistake was entirely our own, for which we apologize.]

  1. You can use question 1 results as a litmus test for the level of education/intelligence and signs of higher/lower culture of each communities general populous …..i think that there is some accuracy here………No really I do. No Being Higher Yes being Lower

  2. Or maybe your just a sore loser and can’t just be thankful that democracy held out. If not agreeing with you is a test for intelligence what about the 31 other states that have made moves against gay marriage?

  3. Question 3 results in old SAD 9 which is the same as the new district show that people should not be entrusted with decisions beyond what to put on their pancakes in the morning.

Nothing really changed in SAD 9 but people still voted against the new law.

That also lends credence to Linwood’s premise. People just don’t think – they react.

Jacob – the same goes for the other states – stupid, maybe not – thoughtful, not a chance.

  4. I would not go as far as to say that people who voted yes on 1 are stupid. But I agree that the vote was reactionary. I also feel that education and life experience (outside of the community or state one was born in) also plays a part. People who have a higher education, and have been other places and experienced other cultures tend to be more tolerant.
