BETHEL – Six years ago, Adam Fissette, of Farmington and New Sharon native Welly Ramsey, of Caribou planned to hike the 100-mile Wilderness of the Appalachian Trail. Food was prepared, plans made, but circumstance forced them to scrap the hike.
Now they’re a full week into hiking the AT from New Hampshire to Katahdin, with a food drop in the Bigelow Pass this week, and another in Monson next week as they finally get to cross the 100-mile wilderness.
Beginning at the Wright Trail off of the Sunday River Road in Bethel, the trek began late on May 14, with about six miles of back-tracking to the New Hampshire line (they had planned on leaving May 6, but online trail reports warned of being turned back that weekend in Mahoosuc Notch by waist-deep snow!).
While Adam’s dog Sally began the journey, she is home briefly and will hopefully get back on the trail from Monson to the Abol Bridge (she’s not allowed into Baxter Park). If all goes well, they should arrive at Baxter Peak sometime the first week of June.
Wish them luck! With the rain and cold we have been having…. Doesn’t sound like much fun! Hope nature is kinder to them this next week!
These two strong young men have got what it takes to meet the challenges ahead. What in inspiring trek.
Good luck and sunny days!
Enjoyed the photos.
