FARMINGTON – The “Can-Art Competition: A Food Drive with a Creative Twist” started on Nov. 15, at the University of Maine at Farmington student center.

Participants used boxed rice, canned vegetables, fruit and beans, canned soups, tuna fish, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, cereal, powdered, boxed or evaporated milk, jam, jelly, toilet paper, and shampoo to construct sculptures to be voted on. Sculptures were on display through this weekend, and judging will take place by popular vote.

Two clubs from UMF – Rotaract and Sustainable Campus Coalition – both had teams that built sculptures in the campus student center. A ballot box is available for passerby to vote for their favorite.

All of the food donated to the Can-Art Competition is benefitting local food pantries, and the competition is sponsored by the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area, in partnership with UMF.
