Features/Outdoors Loon Chick Check: Nine weeks by Administrator September 17, 2011September 19, 2011 2 mins read The younger chick was hiding for two days and I sadly assumed it was gone forever. But at 6:30 this morning it was back with the family on the far side of the lake. This week's pictures are of the older chick; I'm hoping the younger one will be out for the photo shoot next week to see how it's progressing and how the two compare to each other. At nine weeks, the older chick is practicing diving for short periods of time and stretching its wings, but it continues to stay close to a parent and get fed by them. (All photos by Jane Naliboff) Loons look much different straight on than in profile. The chick doesn't look much different than last week, until it unfolds itself and shows off the wings and feathers. With its wings stretched out, and its body upright, you can really see how much growth has taken place in the last few weeks. Dinner time! Learning how to take a bath. Loons, much like other birds, need to wash off parasites and straighten their feathers. This chick continues to desire some very close contact with a parent.
