Procession honors deputy chief

1 min read

Wilton’s antique fire truck, a restored 1929 McCann, pulls to a halt in front of the public safety building Sunday morning. Saluting the truck, which is draped in black cloth in remembrance of Deputy Chief Kendall Burdin, is Jamin Pullen, age 10.

WILTON -Firefighters recognized the passing of one of their own Sunday, with a procession of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.

The flashing lights, dress uniforms and long line of fire engine red were an especially-appropriate goodbye to Deputy Chief Kendall Burdin, 64, who passed away Monday, just a couple days after he led the Wilton Blueberry Festival parade. Burdin had spent 47 years in service of Wilton, Phillips and Strong, and was particularly adept at training young firefighters in techniques and equipment management.

The procession began at Wiles Remembrance Center, on High Street, and moved past the public safety building to reach the Farmington Elks Lodge, where Rev. Dr. Richard Waddell was scheduled to officiate a public service.

An honor guard stands behind Burdin’s turnout gear, as the procession moves past.

Chiefs and personnel from several local-area departments turned out for the ceremony.

The procession included fire trucks, police cruisers, ambulances and civilian vehicles.

Just want to tell you that you had a very remarkable husband/father that you should be very proud of. I am very pleased to have been able to know and work along side of him. Just remember and cherish all of the memories that you have made with him through the years, cause I know I will. I thought of him as a father figure and a mentor in my life for the past 10 years, and I will never forget him. He will be deeply missed by everyone who he came in touch with.

RIP Kendall….I will never forget what you have done for me and I will take to heart what we talked about the last time we talked. Hope you meet and have a good time up there with my dad….your two of a kind
