While raking leaves from the side of our garage, my wife noticed something small that moved, thought it was a leaf. discovered it was a butterfly ??? or was it a moth? covered  with dirt and mud it was alive? (Jim Knox/Wilton)

  1. I looked in my Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Butterflies by Paul A. Opler and Vichai Malikul, and based on the exquisite picture posted here, I am calling the butterfly A “Compton Tortoise Shell” – a member of the Brushfoot family. What so other readers say?
