Summer of construction

A crane lifts steel I-beams into place in what will be the new W.G. Mallett School. The old Mallett School is at right. The new, 60,000 square foot school is slated for completion in 2011.

The new $18.9 million two-story W.G. Mallett School replaces the current aging school which suffers from a number of structural problems, energy inefficiencies and other issues. The new school will be 20,000 square feet larger than the current one, and includes space for a new pre-kindergarten program. 99.6 percent of the building project will be borne by the state’s bonding package and a Maine High Performance School grant of $150,000. Mt. Blue RSD 9 will pay the other .4 percent, or $75,000.

University of Maine at Farmington recently selected Pizzagalli Construction Co. as the general contractor for the new 15,000 square foot Emery Community Arts Center. Construction on the project began in early July and is expected to be completed in August 2011. The center is named in honor of local arts enthusiasts Ted and Marguerite Emery, and is made possible through a private, $5 million donation to UMF.

  1. Gosh, I don’t see any local contractor at either site. Hmmmm, thought this was to bring local contractors in to do all the work. And who was it that said, it will be good for the community locals? Notice the Mallett School project info did not provide the contractor’s name!
