Here's a recent photo I took at my bird feeder in Vienna - a very brave Chickadee! (Photo by Jim Anderberg)

Someone asked in a comment last spring what I would follow over the winter after baby loon flew away. Snow fleas, I replied. Here they are at last for those who like this sort of thing. (© Jane Naliboff Photo)

Mrs. Woodpecker showed me a sunflower seed she picked up. I don't often see woodpeckers on the ground, but this one saved some seeds in the hole she pecked in a lilac branch. (© Jane Naliboff Photo)

  1. What amazing, talented photographers in this area. Thanks to each and every one of you for sharing.

  2. NIce owl, Jim. I’m soooo jealous.Very cool! Call me next time you have one. I’ve been looking all over for one and you only had to look at your feeder. How not fair. Nice chickadee and wing spread as well. Now put away your camera…before the snow fleas get you.

  3. not only talented but very patient to wait and get such wonderful pictures.
    Thank you

  4. WOW! You saw that? I’m sure it wasn’t there for very long. You must be very quick. Owls are a rare find and one of my favorites!

  5. We had a Barred owl sit on our feeder most of one winter. He would eat the moles when they came out to eat the seeds on the ground. My children and I watched it everyday. He would sleep, preen, eat and sometimes fly to a nearby tree. We once got up in the morning to find a grey squirrel in our feeder. He was however, missing his huge bushy tail. Only a bloody stump remained. We think Mr. Owl tried to catch him in the night but only got a tail!

  6. oh myyyyy…. amazing photos…. as i am stunned by the photos i get to th little squirrel popping his head up and let out a chuckle. such a great job. !! Photos like this are priceless. !

  7. I’ve come to really look forward to the nature photos this winter – thank you to all the talented photographers who delight so many of us Bulldog readers! Jim, that last pic, with the feathers splayed, is really amazing…although the owl and chickadee is one of the most unique shots I’ve seen. Jane, I daresay I didn’t know what a snow flea looked like until today!

  8. I must have watched chickadees land on my feeder a zillion times, but I never really saw one until Jim Anderberg’s photo! How beautiful, and how amazing!
Thanks to all of our nature photographers for sharing their vision with us week by week in the Bulldog.
    Even snowfleas!
