Wilton Police Chief Heidi Wilcox and Jessie Sawyer, manager of the Wilton Hardware Store, are working together to provide buckets of sand for those who can’t pick up themselves.

WILTON – After responding to too many incidences of residents injuring themselves after falling on the ice this winter, the Wilton Police Department aims to do something about it.

Armed with five-gallon buckets donated by the Wilton Hardware Store, police officers will deliver sand to those who are unable to get to the town’s public sand pile.

“I’ve been to several incidents where people have fallen on the ice trying to get to their mail or newspaper and received serious injuries,” Police Chief Heidi Wilcox said. To help prevent those slip-and-fall accidents the department has announced the new program, Wilton Bucket Helpers.

“The idea is for the police to deliver a bucket of sand for home-bound people or folks who can’t get to the public sand. We have several residents that we know of who have limited ability to physically get to the public sand,” Wilcox said.

The chief asked Jessie Sawyer, manager of the Wilton Hardware Store, about the idea of providing the buckets for sand delivery.

“She was eager for the community hardware store to be involved. Within a few days, the buckets were ready for use,” Wilcox said.

There are a limited number of buckets available by calling the police department at 645-4222 or email Wilcox at: chief_wilcox@wpdme.com.

“My hopes are that the police can get sand to some of these residents and when they run out of sand we can refill the buckets for them.

  1. One of the many reasons Wilton will always be my home. Neighbors helping neighbors. Such a great idea!
