FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue Area Garden Club’s treasurer, Marion Hutchinson, presented a check for $100 from the club to Anne Mallett at the last garden meeting held at Loraine Norton’s and Matiana Glass’s homes, to be used for a student/students to attend Bug and Butterfly Camp.

Each year the club offers the scholarship to be used for a child who might otherwise not be able to attend the camp. Anne’s camp offers an opportunity for young children to learn about insects in a small backyard/workshop environment at her home on Greenwood Ave. Each child’s natural love of nature is encouraged by sharing the wonder of insects with them.

Sessions include role playing, insect-related books, bug hunts, observations, talks, experiments, nature art and games. Campers learn about the insect’s body parts, their interesting behaviors, nature concepts, and how to catch and keep these insects. They also learn about the immense variety of insects and the beauty of these creatures. They are taught to understand how important insects are in the “web of life” and therefore how important they are in our lives.

  1. Wonderful! My daughter and I are long-time supporters (and beneficiaries) of Anne’s Bug & Butterfly Camp! What an AMAZING opportunity to teach kids about a mysterious world that exists right in their own backyards. I have volunteered for many sessions over the years, and they are all as rewarding as the next. Anne does a tremendous job of educating the kids- without their even knowing it! It is great to watch their bug vocab grow in just a few short days, and the appreciation they gain for critters in the process is immesurable. I strongly believe that this type of experience in which we change kid’s perceptions about things extends well beyond the six-legged community.

It is tremendous to see others in the community extending this opportunity to a child that may otherwise not have the chance. All of our youth should have the chance to benefit from this type of learning environment. I don’t know how she does it, but Anne NEVER disappoints! Thank you. Mt. Blue Area Garden Club, for supporting this!

  2. Thanks should go out to all Mount Blue Area Garden Club members that work hard at our annual plant sale that is held each May at Meeting House Park. The proceeds from the sale go to help not only send a student to Bug & Butterfly Camp but to also beautify Farmington. Good job Ladies!!

  3. My kids went to Anne’s camp when they were little. What a great time and learning adventure. Hats off to the Garden Club for the scholarship.

  4. Our Mt. Blue Area Garden Club has been supporting my Bug & Butterfly Camp with scholarship money for years. Thank you so much for your continued support! Stacie, thank you for your kind words. I couldn’t ask for better PR. I appreciated all of the comments of support.

I am a firm believer in nature being the most important teacher your children will ever have. The scholarships are giving more kids the chance to learn how to look closely at what’s out there in nature and explore this really amazing world later in their own back yards. At home, it’s a no cost, fun activity for your kids to look for insects hiding in/on plants, trees, and the undergrowth of your backyard. I see campers become so excited about finding and catching insects. Then they can’t wait to get home to explore their own yards like never before! After that it’s finding books at the library on those bugs or looking up what they find on the internet. Nature inspires us in so many ways. It also brings out the best in us.

Thank you to all who have given my Farmington nature camp support over its many, many years.
