FARMINGTON – On Wednesday, Feb.16 at a Mt. Blue High School assembly, Colonial Daughters Chapter DAR of Farmington presented the DAR Good Citizen Award to Ethan E. Howatt, son of Maria and Jeff Howatt of Farmington.

Presenting the award was chairwoman of the Good Citizen Committee, Deborah J. Judkins of Upton and Nancy Flick, of Farmington, chapter corresponding secretary. Howatt received a good citizen pin and a certificate authorized and signed by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution President General, Mary Ann T. Wright and Maine Society DAR State Regent, Virginia S. Spiller.

Chairman Judkins, reports that the Colonial Daughters Chapter sponsors seven area schools to recognize excellence in high school seniors. Each school’s faculty nominates several candidates for this honor each year. The person who is chosen to receive the honor must have demonstrated each of the qualities as defined by The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding degree.

These qualities are dependability (truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality); service (cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); leadership (personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation).

Howatt has very strong work ethics; he pays attention to detail and has an exceptional quality of character. He is a tireless worker who eagerly extends himself toward accomplishing the task at hand and is consistently called upon to provide a guiding hand to the efforts of others.

During his four years at Mt. Blue, Howatt has been involved with basketball, football and soccer, and participated in the schools musical programs. He has received High Honors or Highest Honors from grades seven through twelve. He is a member of the National Honor Society. He has built a strong academic foundation, which will be most valuable in his advanced schooling.

Howatt is an Eagle Scout and has worked diligently toward his Eagle Scout Badge, which he will receive in the very near future. Not to long ago he planned a service project to clean up the Sandy River. With the help of 30 student volunteers forty tires, two of which were skidder tires, were removed from the river. For the past five years he has volunteered at the Maine Special Olympics. His services to his school, his church and his community are endless.

Howatt has been excepted at the University of Maine Orono campus, where he will study Chemical Engineering. At the end of his first year he will go on a mission for his church for two years. Then he will return to Orono and resume his studies.
