Farmington Emblem Club honors citizens of the year

FARMINGTON – Farmington Emblem Club honoured the Citizens of the Year with a pot luck dinner prior the the regular Club meeting.

This year Bob and Mabel Cox were selected. Tom Saviello was a guest, and he presented Bob and Mabel with a certificate. Candace Clark, the Emblem Club Community Service chairman presented Bob and Mabel with flowers and a plaque.

Bob and Mabel work with Farmington Emblem Club and Farmington Elks Lodge on activies too numerous to mention. They work hard to make sure the Farmington Fair booth runs smoothly; this includes cleaning the booth, picking turkeys for the delious hot turkey sandwiches that are served, helping to prepare the food that is cooked. Bob and Mabel also are involved in the affiars of the Town of Chesterville the American Legion and the United Methodist Church. Bob sister Mavis Lane also attended as a guest.

Tom Saviello presented the Farmington Emblem Club with a proclamation of Americanism week for the Farmington Fair September 19 -25.

After dinner the regular meeting of Farmington Emblem Club began with the introduction of the Maine State President of Emblem Clubs; Farmington’s very own Diana Oliver and her Marshal Claudette Merchant. The Club performed the opening ritual of stationing the Flags of the United States of America, the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance and opening prayer.

State President Diana Oliver performed the initiation ceremony of Carol Sawtelle as the newest member of the Club. The Club also welcomed reinstated member Linda Abbott. There were 31 members present and 1 guest. This is the first year the were no members dropped from the roll call.

Reports were given by chairmen regarding how busy some of the Farmington Emblem Club members were during the summer hiatus. Several Flag foldings were held throughout Maine, Father’s Day Breakfast, Flag Day, working the Blueberry Festival and a summer out / Surprise Birthday Party fro Avis Mahoney at Shannon Smith’s on Dummers Beach.

Plans were put into place to do more Flag foldings this fall, for the Nursing Home dinner and Harvest dance.

The next meeting of Farmington Emblem Club will be October 7, 2010.
