STRONG – Lawrence M. Curtis Sr., 89, died at this home in Strong on Tuesday morning, April 19, 2011, following a long illness.

He was born July 29, 1921, in Kingfield, the son of Warren and Emma Parson Curtis. He was educated in the schools of Kingfield and Turner. Later on he graduated from aircraft mechanics schooling and received a diploma for teaching and as an instructor for airplane repair. Lawrence joined the Air Force in 1942 where he received a medical discharge in 1944.

He was married to Amy Sawyer of Farmington Falls. Lawrence worked for many businesses, H.G. Winters Mill, Starbird Lumber, Strong Wood, Arthur Gordon, French Chick Farm in Turner, Pillsbury Farm in Farmington Falls where he helped raise beans for local factories, and George McGary at the Hudson Garage where he went to mechanics schools.

In 1946 he moved to Strong and built his own garage where he repaired and sold cars, and worked on heating installations. Later on, he drove school bus for MSAD 58 for 21 years, retiring in 1980 due to cancer and heart surgery. Lawrence served on the Board of Directors for AMPS Ambulance Service for many years. He also did a lot of charity work for those in need.

He is survived by; one son, Lawrence M. Curtis Jr. of Strong; two daughters, Mildred I. Long, of Florida and Clista M. Stevens and companion David Boucher of Strong; one half- sister, Helen L. Pillsbury of Strong; one grandchild ; three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers; Warren C. Curtis. Jr., Charles E. Curtis and Linwood C. Curtis; and two half- brothers, Deane McLeary and Clifford McLeary.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Village Cemetery in Strong with the Rev. John Tolman officiating. Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04243-0819. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan and Scott’s Cremation and Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan.
