Marjorie Rose Smith (1938-2010)

FARMINGTON – Marjorie Rose Smith, 71, of West Farmington, died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 6, 2010, with her loving family at her side, following a long illness at the Sandy River Center for Nursing Care in Farmington.

She was born on April 11, 1938 at Mammie Moody’s House in Rumford Corner, the daughter of Linwood and Cora (Woods) Stearns. She attended school in Wilton, East Dixfield and Dixfield, graduating in 1956.

On May 18, 1957, she married, Sheridan Smith at the East Dixfield Baptist Church. Marjorie worked many years at GH Bass in Wilton and later for Hersey Custom Shoes in Temple. A wonderful seamstress and hand sewer, she also worked from homemaking and repairing snowmobile suits as well as horse equipment and harnesses.

She was a long time member and formerly very active in the Farmington Emblem Club 460 having served as president and other various offices. She enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, camping and fly-fishing until ill health. She also enjoyed and was accomplished in crocheting, quilting and counted cross stitching having been recognized by many ribbons at the county fair. She worked a few years at the fourth division of the exhibition hall at the Franklin County Fair.

She is survived by her mother, Cora Holman of Farmington; her husband, Sheridan Smith of West Farmington; three daughters, Sonia Fish and her husband, David of Weld, Paula Smith of West Farmington and Rebecca Fortunato and her husband, Chris of Skowhegan; three grandchildren, Shain Smith and his wife, Jill of Sanford, Megan Fortunato of Farmington and Matthew Fortunato of Skowhegan; three great grandchildren, Brenner, Teagan and Quinn Podgurski-Smith. She was predeceased by her father, Linwood Stearns; step-father, Kenneth Holman.

Marjorie’s family would like to thank the staff at Sandy River for the care she received during her time there.

Funeral services will be held, 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service & Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. when the service will begin. In honor of Marjorie, the Farmington Emblem Club 460 will perform their ritual at 1:50 p.m. Spring interment will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Wilton.

  1. Sheridan and Family,

    Marge will be missed by many family and friends. She was always very busy and full of life . She radiated her love of life and her wit to all who knew her.

    Marge has left many many grand memories for all to share. She will stay in our hearts and our thoughts.

    May you remember theses warm moments and love forever.
