Zacheus W. Gammon (1950-2010)

CHESTERVILLE – Zacheus W. Gammon, 60, passed away at his home in Chesterville on Monday Dec. 6, 2010.

He was born Jan. 2, 1950 in Rumford, the son of Warren E. and Anne M. (Barnett) Gammon. He graduated from Stephens High School in 1968 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1969 – 1971. Zack recieved four Combat Stars and several medals while serving in Vietnam and Korea aboard the USS Halsey, the USS Prichett, and the USS Horne.

When returning home Zack had several professions including constable for the town of New Vineyard, road commisioner for the town of West Peru, game warden for the Mount Vernon, and Vienna areas, security officer for the Wackenhut International Paper in Jay, and most recently earning his living as a livestock dealer and also lumbering with oxen and skidder.

He married Teresa Gilbert, April 22, 1989 at Shorey Chapel in Industry. Zack was an avid sportsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially coon and coyote hunting with his boys. He was a farmer and butcher by nature and enjoyed the county fairs and pulling his cattle in the “open” and more recently “farmers” class. He pulled in the International Canadian pulls many times.

He was a member of the VFW Post 1081 in Farmington, and also the New England Ox Teamsters and the Maine Draft Horse and Ox Association.

Surviors include his wife Teresa, three sons, Benjamin, Kyle, and Elijah Gammon; a stepson, Douglas Z. Drake; his mother, Anne Barnett Gammon; a sister, Tanya Gammon of Lewiston/Auburn; a brother, David E. Gammon and his wife Brenda of Peru; nieces and nephews: Colton, Gage, Anthony, Katlyn, and Amber; mother-in-law, Eleanor Gilbert and father-in-law George Gilbert and his wife Joan. He is predeceased by his father.

A celebration of life will be held at the Chesterville Town Hall on Saturday Dec. 11, 2010 from 10  to noon. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams-McFarlane Funeral & Cremation Svc. 108 Court St. Farmington, ME.   2. It is with deep hurt & sadness that we extend our sympathy to Zack’s family.
    Zack was a long time friend and our families shared many special moments and memories over the years.
    Zack will forever be remember for his laugh, and easy way with people. We all loved him greatly.
    Zack was the proudest when talking about his boys . He loved you deeply. He always spoke of you with warmth, obviously from the heart and a twinkle in his eye. He was always sure he was keeping you in line.
    Zack’s kindness to our family and our gratefulness that we had him and his family to share will never be forgotten.
