Letter to the Editor: To the residents of Strong

2 mins read

My name is Marc Edwards and I will be running for an open seat on the MSAD 58 School Board as one of Strong’s two representatives.

This is a very challenging time for our schools and communities. We have reached the point where we can no longer afford to provide a quality education for our children at current funding levels. Something must, and indeed will have to change if we are to successfully meet this challenge.

I do not have a silver bullet, but I can promise to explore every opportunity available and work with the community and School Board to find the best solutions available for the challenges facing our district. I promise to listen to and respect all views regarding an issue, look at all available facts, and make informed decisions.

I am a member of the Strong community and have a commitment to support a quality education for our community’s most valuable asset: our youth. We have two kids in MSAD 58 schools, so I also have a commitment as a parent.

Recently the debate whether, or not, to enter into an AOS agreement with SAD 74 has become quite divisive. I have listened to both proponents and opponents and believe there are valid points on both sides of this issue. However, I have come to the conclusion that the district should not enter into this agreement. I believe we can realize much of the savings through other arrangements. The penalty is an issue that cannot be ignored, and has weighed heavily, but in the larger view of our district’s future I do not believe entering into an AOS agreement plays a significant part of that future.

I am more than happy to discuss this or any issue you may have in a civil manner. I realize that issues relating to schools can become personal and very emotional, but I will strive to bring an objective and civil approach to my position as a board member.

Please do not hesitate to call (860-9242) or email (run26@tds.net) to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
