Strong resident bags bull moose

1 min read

Ethan Boyd of Strong was the subpermittee for his mom Tonia Boyd this year for the 2012 moose hunt. He was able to shoot his first moose with a muzzle loader rifle on opening day, Monday, October 8. This one shot proved to be a big success. The bull moose, shot in zone 13, weighed 865 lbs.

  1. Way to go Ethan! My husband and I just returned from our moose hunt in Zone 4. I now understand that this is no easy feat – especially with a muzzle loader! Nice job!

  2. Can someone explain why the picture looks as though it was taken after dark, when hunting is not allowed? Thanks!

  3. I’ve shot 3 moose over the years and only had one of them gutted and loaded before full dark. It’s a long, slow process and if you don’t shoot him before 2 or 3 o’clock it’ll be dark before you get done with him and are ready for photos.

  4. To “always learning”: My guess is that Ethan shot this moose very close to the time that “legal hunting time” ended just as we did with ours. It is legal for you to “pull the trigger” up until a certain time each day (always adjusted by the time that sunset occurs). If he shot it just before sunset, and they had to track the moose at all, then dusk or dark may occur by the time you find the moose.

  5. great job Ethan. Enjoy your meat. Hope you get a nice dear to go with it. Good luck hunting!!!!!!!!
