WELLESLEY, MA – On Saturday the UMF men’s rugby team rolled to convincing 47-12 and 43-10 wins against Wheaton College and Springfield College to capture the overall championship of the 17-team tournament which has been ongoing for the past six weeks.

In Saturday’s finals, played in summer-like conditions at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., the UMF men overpowered the other two finalists and put on a display of wide-open, running rugby which left the results of both games in little doubt just minutes after each match began.

The UMF team captains, Ryan Nickerson and Chip Burnham, led from the front as they have all season, and the team’s potent attack was spearheaded by both the punishing running of center Taber Hammond and back-rower Dan Linck and by a backline which was ruthlessly efficient in finishing off its scoring chances.

The UMF men will try to extend their winning ways Saturday, May 2 when they try to win their third consecutive Maine Collegiate Championship at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in Cumberland Center.

  1. Hi Woody,

Congratulations on building such a successful team again.

I see you are now with a ‘grey full set’ with the cap hiding the receeding hair line ?

I have read on our forum that you are planning to tour next year, this is great news as we look forward to renewing friendships and repaying your teams fantastic hospitality when we toured in 06.

    Brian
